FIGHT DISEASES WITH FOOD (Part-1)

These days diseases are prevalent even it’s complex to find people who don’t have any illness. Many people die every year due to these chronic illnesses. Although with the help of advanced medications, the rate has decreased, still medications are not preferred in the first place because firstly, drugs always carry some side effects and secondly, they are expensive. So the question arises, what is the cheaper and organic way then? The answer is FOOD; it’s more affordable, organic and doesn’t contain any side effects.

“Eat to Beat Disease”, written by medical doctor William W. Li is all about how our food choices affect our body, how we can save ourselves from several diseases and how we can use food as a weapon to fight illnesses. This article is an abstract of it.

We usually relate health to the absence of diseases only. However, it has a greater meaning than that. Li says, “It is an active state which keeps our cells and organs functioning smoothly”.

Our body contains five health defence systems which are our health foundations. They protect us from different diseases, can even fight severe illnesses like cancer. However, these defence systems activate through our diet. Therefore, we must know what foods support each defence system. We can maintain our health and fight diseases this way.

To make the food choices and diet plan for us this way, we first need to understand the healing powers of our defence systems and their mechanism, which I am going to discuss now;

  1. Angiogenesis

First comes angiogenesis, which is responsible for providing oxygen and vital nutrients to all our body organs, and it also helps maintain and grow blood vessels. If any disease appears on our body, it cuts out the blood supply and nutrients needed for that particular disease’s growth. If you take the example of cancer, microscopic cancers are formed every day in our body because of the mistakes occurring in DNA during cell division. But angiogenesis prevents them from growing and invading other organs in our body, so nothing happens. They are harmless until or unless they are under angiogenesis control.

  1. Regeneration

Regeneration takes place by our stem cells. They are responsible for the growth and maintenance of our organs. They, when needed, work on our bodies’ dead or damaged cells and regenerate, replace or repair them according to the requirement. For example, our lungs and stomach regenerate every eight days, and the small intestine every two to four days. So if our stem cells are not present or don’t work, our organs will stop working merely in a few days.

  1. Microbiome

It involves the functions of bacteria. Previously bacteria were supposed to be harmful, but recent research showed that most bacteria are pretty helpful and good for us. They promote health. We can’t live without them.

The microbiome is a good bacteria present in our bodies to defend them. Like some bacteria help fight diabetes and prevent it, Bifidobacteria (a type of bacteria) helps lessen stress. In short, bacteria influence all our defence systems which is why they are essential for our overall health.

  1. DNA Protection

Li named DNA a “Personal Genetic Blueprint”. DNA carries our genetic information from generation to generation, but other than that, DNA also keeps us alive and maintain our everyday functioning. DNA protects our body from the consequences of the damages created by unhealthy food, cell reproduction, water and air pollution, and many other causes.

  1. Immunity

Last but not least is the immune system, the most important one. The human body immune system is the front line of defence against all diseases. It protects us from infections and viruses, fights with an invader that can harm our bodies, and saves us from falling ill. It kills all the abnormal and unrecognisable cells before they grow dangerously. Hence, the most vital one.
